Pattern description from Interweave Knits, Winter 2004:
Mari Lynn Patrick’s Mock Turtleneck sweater is worked side to side in lofty brioche stitch that combines yarnovers and slipped stitches to knit up thick and fast. The sweater is worked from the left sleeve cuff to the right, and the ribbed border at the bottom of the sweater is added after the body is completed. No need to block the soft-spun merino wool; the oversize stitches knit easily into shape, so this warm, casual classic will be finished in no time.

Finished Size: 42 (44, 46)“ (106.5 (112, 117) cm) chest/bust circumference.

Yarn: Crystal Palace Iceland (100% merino, 109 yd (100 m)/100 g): #6320 leaf, 7 (8, 9) balls.

Needles: Sizes 11 and 13 (8 mm and 9 mm). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Stitch holders; tapestry needle.

Note on Gauge: To check row gauge, measure straight up along a single column of knit sts on the RS and count each st in the column as 2 rows.

• “When checking stitch counts after shaping has occurred, count only the ‘real’ stitches on the needle, and not the yarnovers.”
• “It is easy to forget occasionally to work one of the yarnovers in this pattern. To keep the pattern correct, make sure that each stitch slipped purlwise with yarn in front (not selvedge st) is followed by a yarnover. As a further pattern check, a stitch knitted together with a yarnover should always be a knit stitch on the side of the work facing you.”
• “From the yarnovers automatically in a one-steop method as follows: Slip a stitch purlwise with yarn in front according to pattern. With yarn still in front, insert right needle tip into next stitch and yarnover in preparation for working them as k2tog. Bring yarn to back over the right needle, and knit the stitches together. You will have created a yarnover and worked the knit stitch at the same time. Don’t forget to work the final yarnover, right before the selvedge stitch, on Row 2.”
