Sidewinder Socks
About This Design
Japanese stitch dictionaries are a rich source of design inspiration for me. The lace pattern that I have used for the Sidewinder Socks is a tweaked version of a simple lace pattern from my copy of the Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible by Hitomi Shida (translated by Gayle Roehm).
I just love the way that the simple lace pattern wiggles up the sock. I’ve also included some twisted rib into the pattern mix to ensure a snug fit around the foot and ankle. Taken together, the vertical lines of twisted rib and the wiggly lines of the lace stitch pattern provide a lovely harmonious balance—don’t be surprised if you feel a Zen-like glow when you knit these socks.
Gauge
34 stitches x 48 rounds over 10 cm (4 in) in stocking (stockinette) stitch, knitted in the round using 2.25 mm (US size 1.0, UK size 13) needles. A good match for gauge (especially stitch gauge) is important for this pattern in order to ensure a good fit.
Yarn
Approximately 100 metres/109 yards of 4 ply/fingering weight sock yarn that knits to match the required tension gauge (equivalent to approximately 100g of yarn with the label specifying 420 metres/460 yards per 100g).
The sample Sidewinder Socks have been knitted with Paton’s Nylox 4-ply sock yarn in shade 2002. This is heritage sock yarn that I inherited from my wonderful great Aunty Peg.
Needles
A pair of 2.25 mm (US size 1, UK size 13) 60 cm/24 in circular needles. Optional 2.5 mm (US size 1.5, UK size 12) circular needles for the cuff.
Notions
Tapestry needle.
Blocking materials.
Removable stitch marker.
