“Silbermöwe” (seagull, inspired by the French shade name “Goeland” of De Rerum Ulysse) is a long, oversized cardigan in Half Brioche which can be worn outdoors in autumn, or indoors as a layering piece to save on energy.
The back of the cardigan is worked bottom-up in Half Brioche to the underarms as a rectangle and continued with a few side increases for the shoulder slope (the perfect TV knit); then the neck is shaped. The upper part of the back is folded over the shoulders, and the left and right edges below the underarm are folded diagonally to become the outer fronts. The fronts are continued sideways, with increases below the shoulders. Sleeves are worked top-down, up to the wrist. As a finishing touch, hip pockets are added by picking up stitches from the folded back piece.
Needles: Main needle size is 3,5mm; 3,25mm needle used for edges.
Gauge: 20 sts x 44 rows in Half Brioche. (In fact, any gauge will do if you work by measurements only.)
Approx. 2300-2500m of a Sport weight yarn needed for an overall length of approx. 90cm.
For my sample, I have used De Rerum Ulysse (100% wool, 184m/ 50g) – one of those kinds of pure wool yarns which bring out the structure of Half Brioche best. Ruppert Garne Soft Lamb with two strands held together or Filcolana Pernilla would be good substitutes.
The cardigan is a one-size-fits all piece, with a generous back width of 90cm (measured at underarm), suitable from S (with lots of ease) to XXL. However, 3 different sizes are described for the sleeves.
Worked at a gauge of 2 sts more/ less on 10cm, the cardigan will approx. 10% smaller/ bigger.
