Silent Tide is the first pattern of the Hand in Hand Collection - a delicious collection of patterns all using more than one yarn or colour to create depth and texture to your items whilst keeping them simply stunning and stunningly simple! Purchasing the collection as an ebook will be more economical than buying the patterns individually and is the only way to get the pattern that is exclusive to the collection. Please see the lower box to the right for the ‘collection’ purchase option.
Using one skein each of two different fingering weight yarns, Silent Tide is a simple yet effective shawl suitable for both beginners and more advanced knitters.
The original Silent Tide was worked with one skein of silk/merino fingering and one skein of a sport weight mohair silk blend, in this case, Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply with a Lichtfaden Silk Halo. Good partners are Handmaiden SeaSilk and Maidenhair, Lichtfaden Pure Silk and Silk Halo, Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply and Faery Wings, Skein Queen Selkino and Ripple.
A Boo with no beads, no picots! Simple to knit, simple to wear and with a million different combinations each version will be unique. Choose your combination and make it your own!
REQUIREMENTS
Size Options: As written – 86” (218cm) wide, 20” (51cm) deep, though the shawl is easily enlarged or reduced. Measurements taken using Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply and Lichtfaden Silk Halo. Note that measurements will differ depending on yarn, tension, blocking etc and these are therefore given as a guide only.
Yarn: Yarn A: Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply 365m/100g, Lichtfaden Pure Silk Fingering (400m/100g), Handmaiden SeaSilk (400m/100g), Skein Queen Selkino (400m/100g) or other fingering weight yarns of similar composition of around 400m/100g weight. For Yarn B, Skein Queen Ripple (350m/100g), Lichtfaden Silk Halo (320m/100g), Handmaiden Maidenhair (350m/100g) or Fyberspates Faery Wings (350m/100g though now comes in 50g skeins so you will need two). Alternatively Yarn B could be a contrasting colour in the same base as Yarn A.
Circular Needles: 3.5mm (US4), 3.75mm (US5) 4mm (US 6) and 5mm (US8) about 1m in length or needles to create a pleasing fabric – your fabric should not be too dense and should have good drape.
You will also need: stitch markers, needle (for weaving in ends), blocking pins and mats.
Gauge: Gauge is not overly important as this is a shawl. It is better to knit a swatch to ensure that you are happy with your tension and the drape of your fabric. However, the gauge achieved was 17 sts to 4” after blocking – measurement taken over the main body pattern of Chart Two.
The pattern is both fully written and charted.
You will find it useful to print your pattern on a colour printer, however, coloured pencils could be used to highlight aspects of the pattern.
