Prayer Plant Fun Facts
Interestingly, Prayer Plants (Maranta Leuconeura) get their common name from their habit of folding their leaves up and in during the evening, like praying hands, then opening them during the day. They are also widely known as Calathea.
Prayer Plants are native to the rainforests of Brazil.
Prayer plants help clear the air in your home by filtering indoor air pollutants. They’re also well regarded for their medicinal properties (including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiviral).
Prayer Plant leaves constantly move during the day, but most dramatically when they shift up in a vertical “praying hand” position in the evening. The motion comes from the movement of liquid in special cells at the base of each leaf.
Prayer plants come in a wide variety of colors; ranging from light and dark greens to shades of pink, purple, red, and even silver!
They are also known as a symbol of new beginnings.
