This pattern is intended to be as simple as possible and makes an ideal beginner project. It is written in English using American crochet terms. Boris’s arms are made first and then you attach them as you make the body so it involves as little sewing as possible. The pattern has also been independently tested by beginner crocheters.

To make a simple Boris bear, you will need:

Yarn of your choice. Yarn weight doesn’t really matter - the size of your project will simply turn out bigger or smaller! I used Stylecraft Special Aran weight yarn and my finished bear measures approximately 22.5cm tall.

You will need the following colours:

Main Colour - I used dark brown (approx. 119m).

Face Patch Colour - I used shade ‘Mocha’ (approx. 2.5m).

Scarf Colour - I used red (approx. 6.5m).

Nose Colour - I used black (approx. 1.5m).

Please note - The amount of yarn used will vary according to yarn weight, hook size and stitch tension so these measurements are only a rough guide.

A suitable size hook for the yarn you have chosen - I used a 4mm hook.

Toy stuffing.

A pair of 9mm black eyes.

Other tools you will need are a tapestry needle, some scissors and a stitch marker.

You will need to know how to work in both rows and continuous rounds (worked in a spiral with no joining), using the following stitches:

Ch = chain stitch

Sl st = slip stitch

Sc = single crochet

Inc = increase (2 single crochet stitches worked into a single stitch)

Dec = decrease (2 single crochet stitches combined into a single stitch)

Hdc = Half double crochet
