From the original pattern:
“This pattern uses worsted-weight yarn and is written for sets of 5 double-pointed needles. The 4” or 5” glove needles work especially well. If you prefer to use sets of 4 needles, you may adapt this pattern by placing all the stitches from needles #3 and #4 on one needle.

Gauge: This pattern was originally written for Brown Sheep Lambs Pride singles yarn, which is a heavy-worsted weight. The original gauge is 5 stitches per inch, using size 6 needles (or size to achieve gauge.) If you are knitting to fit a particular child, use the yarn specified. If you’re knitting for charity, a wider range of worsted weight yarns can be used, since the mittens will be matched to the child they fit. The important thing is to make a firm, sturdy fabric, so use needles sized to give you this result. If the 6’s give you a loose, “hole-y” fabric, go down to size 4.

You’ll also need another set of double-pointed needles a size or two smaller, for the ribbing.

Other tools needed: a darning needle and waste yarn or 2 small stitch holders.“
