Simple Harmonic Motion is the term used in physics to describe the motion of, among other things, a swinging pendulum.

There are many times when I think that knitting in general could be described with the words Simple Harmonic Motion!! However the creation of a shawl using short rows symmetrical about the centre has always especially reminded me of this term. (Due to the short rows the shape of the shawlette is somewhere between a crescent and an half-circle!)

The border of the shawl is knit first and then the main body of the shawl is knit at right angles to this.

I use so-called German Short Rows in this pattern and give a detailed idescription on how to work them in the pattern. This is an excellent pattern for anyone who is looking for an introduction to German Short Rows. (In my own opinion by far the simplest method of working short rows).

The shawl can be knitted in any yarn weight, even combining two contrasting colours of yarn by working alternating sections in different colours.

The Pattern is written for 5 pattern repeats. Depending on how much yarn you have, you can stop at four repeats or continue with six or more. Most of my testers finished after four repeats.
