Since I had a bunch of Lion Brand’s Sock-Ease in the “Marshmallow” colourway, I thought I should knit one up! Also, in the 2012 version of the Lorax, the Once-ler has an affinity for marshmallows, and I do wear a Once-ler costume to conventions and other events fairly often, so I thought it’d be nice to have a marshmallow prop that wouldn’t go bad in my box of Once-ler props. Not to mention that while it’s fun to bring a bag of marshmallows to eat and give away to conventions, the summer heat in Georgia usually winds up melting the marshmallows into one massive blob that’s hard to deal with.

This is one of my first full patterns for public use, so I’m sorry if it’s written in a bit of an unconventional manner. I’m also sorry if it wound up being extremely similar to one of the other existing marshmallow patterns by someone else (I couldn’t check the pay ones without buying them to make sure mine wasn’t identical to those, but I know it’s not identical to the free ones.) Patterns for marshmallows seem like the kind of thing that could wind up with two people independently creating nearly identical patterns.

Use a white sock yarn with sock needles. I used Lion Brand Sock-Ease in “Marshmallow” with size U.S. 1 (2.25mm) needles. You will need circulars or DPNs. My marshmallow is 2” (5cm) tall. You could probably also use a lighter weight yarn if you wanted to in order to make a smaller marshmallow.

INSTRUCTIONS
The order goes Body, Ends, Bottom, Ends. If you would like, you could add a face or other details either before finishing up the bottom or after finishing the knit work.

BODY
CO 40
Knit about 20 rows or until satisfied. A body that is about two inches/5 centimeters long looks good with the 40 stitch circumference.
Follow ENDS to close the top.

ENDS
Purl 1 row.
Round 1: K6, K2togx5 (35 stitches total)
Round 2: K5, K2togx5 (30 stitches total)
Round 3: K4, K2togx5 (25 stitches total)
Round 4: K3, K2togx5 (20 stitches total)
Round 5: K2, K2togx5 (15 stitches total)
Round 6: K1, K2togx5 (10 stitches total)
Round 7: K2togx5 (5 stitches total)
Cut the yarn, leaving a small tail. Use a yarn needle to thread the tail through the remaining 5 stitches, pull it tight, knot it, and then thread the tail into the body.

BOTTOM
Stuff the body. Pick up 40 stitches at the bottom. Then follow ENDS to close the bottom.

VARIANTS
To make the marshmallow a bit smaller, you could cast on 35 stitches instead of 40, knit less than 20 rows, and then skip Round 1 of the ENDS section. (Untested.)

To make the marshmallow significantly smaller, you could cast on 15 stitches, knit around 10 rows, and then skip to Round 5 of the ENDS section. (Untested.)
