Simple Knitted Tunic Dress
A simple knitted tunic dress for a smallish/average four year old. It has a picot hem, stocking stitch skirt and bodice, two rows of single crochet around the arms and neck and 3 crochet flowers stitched on.
My girls wear this style of dress all the time and I couldn’t find a suitable simple pattern so I made this one up. It’s my first pattern and it’s really just a template so feel free to change and alter as you like. You can use a textured stitch on the bodice if you prefer. You could pick up stitches around the neck and armholes instead of crochet and do any other trim you prefer. I found the flower pattern tutorial on youtube.
The instructions are for a standard gauge flat bed knitting machine and I’ve also included the version for a bond classic knitting machine. The bodice on this version was done in a manual tuck stitch every third needle.
It’s easily adaptable to hand knitting, just knit the skirt in the round and then over and back for the bodice. Stitch the end of picot hem rather than picking up and knitting together. You may need to adjust gauge but the shape is pretty forgiving.
The pattern fits my small/average four year old twins but can very easily be increased in width and length to fit an older/younger child.
The pattern used 100grms of the main colour and less than 50 grms of the contrast colour.
I hope you enjoy making variations on this pattern, please post pictures to let me know how you get on.
