Guage doesn’t really matter - if you knit more loosely it will just make a looser weave cloth, which will work just as well.

Any cotton yarn will work. Cotton is preferred over acrylic for use in cleaning cloths.

This is a great beginner pattern to learn knitting - as your skill increases with practice, the quality of the knit will vary, but the resulting cloths will still be useful.
