Simple Side to Side Socks
This pattern was originally available only to participants in Sock Madness 4, March 10, 2010, and therefore has only one size. Now you can download that pattern with a supplement included: a page of instructions for modifying the pattern for more sizes, to fit your own measurements and yarn and gauge.
Shows variegated and self-striping yarns to good effect.
Construction Notes: Sock is worked flat, from side edge over instep then around sole, leaving a gap for heel. Flat piece is then grafted into a tube, and stitches for toe and heel and cuff are picked up around open edges and worked in the round.
Uses a LOT of Kitchener Stitch, aka grafting.
Fit Notes: Not a good choice for high insteps or where ankles are much wider than feet (or vice versa), although an advanced knitter would be able to change the pattern to compensate. That’s because the fabric stretches more lengthwise and less widthwise than standard-direction socks.
