Simple Socks
Pattern Update! As of September 30th 2022 there is a fresh new update for our Simple Sock pattern. The update includes a fresh layout, new photos, and lots of extra tips and tricks making this even more beginner friendly. There is even a bonus colouring in page included in the download section to help you plan your colours!
These simple socks are an easy introduction for new sock knitters, or a basic vanilla sock for those that know what they are doing.
The socks are worked from the toe up using circular needles and magic loop, and have a mitred short row heel. There may be some new techniques that you will need to look up, but they will be a great addition to your knitting toolkit!
Sizes: One size for width of sock, with suggestions for length as follows:
Eur size 36 (38, 40), or 22.5 (24, 25) cm. Or knit them whatever length you like!
Yarn: Any 4ply / Fingering weight sock yarn.
We used Lang Jawoll sock (210m/50g) in 3 colours, but you can use as many or as few colours as you like!
Quantity: Approximately 40-80g total, depending on foot and leg length.
Needle: 2.25-2.50mm 80cm circular needles, depending on your tension.
If you are a tight knitter use 2.50mm, or a looser knitter try 2.25.
Gauge: Roughly 36 sts x 48-50 rows to 10cm in Stocking Stitch
Materials: Yarn needle for sewing in ends, 1 locking stitch marker or safety pin for marking front of sock (optional)
For optional pom pom: XS pom pom maker or a fork, and scissors
Techniques Used
- Judy’s Magic Cast On
- Magic Loop
- German Short Row Heel
- I used this stretchy sewn bind off, but a decrease bind off or Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off work fine too.
- If you’d like to add some cute mini pom pom’s to the back of your sock like ours, we have a handy tutorial over on our website!
- Remember, it is easy to customise the length of your socks, just knit the leg or foot longer or shorter!
For a Baby Sock version you can find our pattern over here.
Yarn used in original sample is Wren & Ollie Sock in Nymph and Juniper, and in 2022 sample is Lang Jawoll Sock in 0228, 0246 and 0372.
