In this pattern and video tutorial I share the formula for how to crochet an amigurumi ball in two ways, as well as how to neatly finish or how to close any amigurumi piece.

This formula works to create a sphere of any size, whether you want to crochet under both loops of each stitch or in the back loop only. The only differences are in how you decrease and close the piece.

Balls are great projects for beginners who want to practice working in the round, especially for people who want to make amigurumi. They are a terrific beginner project for kids who want to learn to crochet. You can practice the magic ring, increases, crocheting even rounds, decreases, and closing an open amigurumi piece. In the video tutorial I link to other videos that demonstrate each of these steps.

Use the basic formula outlined in the video to make your own emojis, baby toys, dryer balls, decorative spheres, a solar system, or even connect them together to make a caterpillar! I have added instructions for how to modify this pattern to make a Christmas ornament.

To make a ball you will need:

• Worsted weight yarn

• Size H or 5.0 mm crochet hook (recommended hook size for beginners but for those with more experience I recommend using a smaller, 3.75 mm, hook)

• Polyester (or other) stuffing

• Yarn needle

• Locking stitch markers (optional but recommended for beginners)
