I absolutely love triangle shaped scarves. I often used shawl patterns and just wear them “backwards” as scarves. But for the spring and fall, I find they are too bulky and warm.

So to cut down on the size and warmth, I came up with this simple square pattern with two long sections worked off of it. The joy of this is that you can make the scarf as long (or as short) as you like. I made mine just past shoulder length, but longer would look nice with a fancy dress or even an open jean jacket.

Materials

worsted weight yarn

For the solid color scarf I used Caron Simply Soft in Woodland Heather and Off White for the edge. I used the whole ball 142 g/5 oz, 228 m/250 yds of the Woodland Heather, and a small amount (16 g/0.2 oz, 27 m/30 yds) of the Off White for the edging.

For the striped scarf I used Caron Simply Soft Stripes in Churchill Downs for my main color, and Caron Simply Soft in Dark Country Blue for my contrast color. I used the whole ball 142 g/5 oz, 228 m/250 yds of the Caron Simply Soft Stripes in Churchill Downs, and a small amount (45 g/0.6 oz, 75 m/90 yds) of the Dark Country Blue for the contrast color.

5.0 mm (H/8) crochet hook
a small crochet hook (any size that fits through the loop on the charms)
tapestry needle
scissors
5 or 6 charms (optional)

Abbreviations Used – US Crochet Terms
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
dc – double crochet
tc – treble crochet
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
hdcblo – hdc in the back loop only
pc - Work 5 dc into indicated st. Remove hook from loop and insert it into the first of the 5 dc made. Grab the loop that you dropped, pull through the stitch and ch 1.
bpc – beginning popcorn – same as a pc, but the first dc stitch is replaced with a ch 3.
