A part of the Nestled Series, which also includes “Nestled With Color” (a more complex version of this design for DK only that includes 2-color brioche rib and stranded double-knitting), “Nestled in Ombré” (scarf), (uses heavy worsted or Aran-weight yarn double stranded for either an Ombré or rainbow effect), ”Nestled Fingerless Mitts (DK)” and ”Nestled Fingerless Mitts (Bulky/Super Bulky).” This design was commissioned to celebrate the 2nd Anniversary of Prairie Yarn Over, a chapter of TKGA located in eastern Iowa.
ERRATUM: (posted 7.26.15) The number of caston stitches for the DK version and the Bulky/Super Bulky versions were inverted in the first publishing of the design. The updated pattern (v.2) now correctly indicates a caston of 84 sts for DK and 34 for B/SB.
This knitwear is designed for maximum flexibility: it may be worn as
♥ a wrap across the shoulders, fastening it by passing one end through the knit tab located in the center front;
♥ a shawl by locating the knit tab near your shoulder and crisscrossing the two ends over your shoulder as one passes through the tab;
♥ a scarf by double-wrapping it around your neck and slipping one end through the loop in front.
The pattern provides insturctions for either of two yarn weights: a DK version (which also works well for light-worsted or sport-weight) and a Bulky/Super Bulky version: You choose!
Gauge is not terribly important, the main thing is to find the right needle size for yarn you select; you will maximize drape by achieving a looser knit rather than a tighter one. Drape can also be maximized by blocking the width heavily.
Needles: The US 6/4 mm are recommended for the DK version; The US15/10mm are recommended for the Super Bulky/ Bulky.
Yarn Requirements: for the version using DK weight, approximately 900 yds is needed, and for the version written for Bulky or Super Bulky yarn, approximately 360 yds is needed. However, since the tab is placed near the cast on edge, the length is flexible and you can easily make it longer or shorter according to how you are liking the fit or to accommodate your yarn supply.
Pattern is designed for the beginning knitter or to feature a very special yarn and only requires knowledge of a few simply skills: Backward Loop Cast On, Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Sewn Bind Off, Knit, Purl, K2tog, P2tog. Instruction is provided for Lifted Increases. A preferred cast on or bind off may be substituted; these were selected because they create a nice edge which isn’t too tight and they very closely mirror each other in appearance.
MUCH THANKS to my fabulous test knitters for this design: TheaMidnight Kittyhook gypsyinthecastle
