Originally published in Love of Crochet Fall 2017 as the Autumn Star Cowl and Infinity Scarf, this updated self-published version has an additional size, updated yarns (replacing one discontinued yarn and a discontinued colorway), and a photo tutorial for the star stitch variation used in the pattern.
These fun cowls work up quickly and feature a star stitch variation worked lengthwise on the bias, then seamed. The design works nicely with either a solid / semi-solid / tonal yarn or a self-striping yarn to highlight the diagonal stitching.
The three sizes options are for a neckwarmer (size 1), medium cowl (size 2), or long loop (size 3). Any of the given widths can be worked to any length to further customize your cowl (keeping in mind yardage requirements will change). Make the neckwarmer or medium cowl for transitional weather, or wear the long loop doubled for extra warmth during the colder season.
Precise gauge is not critical, but working a gauge swatch can be helpful if you’re substituting yarn / yarn weights.
This pattern uses U.S. crochet terminology.
Skill Level: Intermediate.
Finished Measurements: Sizes 1 (2, 3):
9” tall by 22” circumference (8” tall by 34” circumference, 7” tall by 49” circumference), rounded to the nearest inch. The fabric is flexible in both directions, and sizes 2 and especially 3 will narrow and lengthen when worn.
Yarn: Approximately 220 (330, 390) yards worsted-weight yarn.
Single-plies (as shown here) are ideal, but not necessary:
Size 1: Schoppel Wolle Reggae Ombre (100% virgin wool; 110 yd 100m / 1.76 oz 50g): #2518, 2 balls.
Sizes 2 (3): Cascade Yarns Eco Highland Duo (70% undyed baby alpaca/30% undyed merino wool; 197 yd 180 m / 3 ½ oz 100g): #2204 — Ecru (#2208 — Silver), 2 (2) skeins.
Hook: Size I (5.5 mm). Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
Notions: Yarn needle.
