Sith Shawl Fairy Mohair

The Sidhe/Sith Shawl (pronounced Shee Shawl) is a one-armed shawl inspired by the opulent wraps of the 1920’s and 30’s. The sleeve and armscye is shaped so that the seam lies under the arm. As such, this is a right hand sleeve. You can make a left hand sleeve by swapping the knit side for the purl side, effectively knitting it “inside out.” The sleeve is long and slouchy, with a shaped cuff covering the hand top the knuckles.

I have been making my Sidhe/Sith Shawls for over a decade. They are always a fun, stress-free knit, and I always get comments on them. This mohair version is the first type I made. It is light and warm, versatile, and often dramatic.

The bobbles are completely free form. You place them wherever and whenever you like on the knit side. There is no “mistake” to be made because there is no rigid pattern being formed to make a “missing” bobble obvious. Get creative with it. Make the bobbles different sizes. Go from dense to sparse, or spell a name or slogan—it’s up to you. Just keep the bobbles about 4 or more stitches away from the edge on the arm to reduce bulk and keep from having bobbles between your arm and body.

Originally in the vintage Henry’s Attic Toaga 1 or 6, I have included information for Lana Grossa Silkhair, held double to achieve the same gauge. It’s dreamy, drapey, and oh so gorgeous. You can also use Henry’s Attic Toaga 2, but that will yield a firmer warmer fabric.

You can adjust the fit, size, and look at each section of the shawl: Sleeve, back, shoulder, front, and the end taper.
