The inspiration for this learn-to-knit blanket came from a very special knitter’s choice of Warm Up America for her Bat Mitzvah project. In the spirit of Sivan’s project, this pattern is designed to encourage exploration of the craft and give the knitter an excellent foundation in a variety of common knitting techniques. Happy knitting!

Sivan’s Blanket is a comprehensive learn-to-knit course in a single project. Each blanket square features specific skills followed by challenge squares to reinforce the concept. Skills range from knit-purl combinations to lace and cables stitches. The squares are then seamed together into a blanket to provide practice with common finishing techniques. Finally, an I-cord binding is added to the blanket edge to give a crisp, finished look.

Finished blanket is approximately 42” x 72” or 105 cm x 180 cm or 7 squares x 12 squares after blocking. Each square is blocked to 6” x 6”.

Blanket size can be adjusted by adding or subtracting squares. Modifying size will modify yarn quantity required. Each square knitted to gauge consumes approximately 14 grams of yarn.

Squares can be worked in any color. If you are new to knitting, please choose a light or medium color for your first squares so that your work will be easier to see.

For the sample, all designs have been worked in all colors. Two to three squares of each design were worked in each color. Fewer colors can be used if desired.

Squares were chosen at random during final assembly. Each design could be worked in a single color and then arranged in a non-random pattern if desired.

The I-cord binding requires a surprisingly large amount of yarn. When working squares, reserve at least 30 grams or 60 yards of the desired yarn in the desired color for the I-cord binding. Changing the size of the blanket will change the amount of yarn needed for the binding.
