Skåne
Skåne has throughout history been the breadbasket of Sweden. In a country where less than 10 percent of the land is under cultivation, the southernmost province of Skåne stands out as being rich and fertile. It is also the home of one of the most famous Swedish patterns - an unusual tile effect of complex thistle-like motifs which I saw on a nineteenth century sweater knitted in white on a blue ground. This pattern is nationally very popular and represents one of the last vestiges of professional knitting. Coats featuring this pattern can be purchased today, knitted on very fine needles and usually from three colours - white, red, and blue.
I have stuck to the original colours of blue and white for this sweater in a loose, sporty style that can be worn by both sexes. It has a dropped shoulder, round neck with small front opening, and a narrow crochet trim. The photograph shows how the main shade and contrast can be successfully reversed.
