The Skeeter skirt is a skater style skirt with an incredible wow-effect. It flows, it drapes, it gives a long and elegant silhouette, it’s simple and it has pockets! It is also a smooth and easy knitting process thanks to the simple top-down construction, as well as an extremely versatile design with the knit-to-measure and gauge-less recipe. If you’re into miles of stockinette in the round but still enjoy the potato-chippy aspect of having something different happening every few rows, this will be the perfect project for you.

The pattern is graded from newborn to 150 cm / 60” waist circumference, and you can use whatever yarn weight you want, on whatever needle size you want, for the length you want, and you won’t even need to count your stitches at any point. You can choose a plant-based or silk yarn for a drapey and summery skirt, or you can choose a wool blend for a warm and cosy fabric that will hug your legs during the colder months. You could also knit a sparkly and elegant version for the festive season! In other words, it is always Skeeter Skirt season

To see different versions of the pattern knit in various yarns, sizes, lengths and flares, you can check out the testers version under the “Project” tab or the #SkeeterSkirt on instagram.

The pattern includes the following:

  • Instructions for 2 flare options: Small flare and Large flare
  • Optional pockets

  • Optional short rows to add length to the back
  • 6 bottom hem options to choose from: raw stockinette edge with or without anti-roll technique, folded-over stockinette, i-cord bind off, garter hem, ruffle

YARN ESTIMATES
The downside of having the freedom of a gauge-less pattern is that it is impossible to give accurate yarn usage estimates: it depends too heavily on the unique combination of tension, fiber blend and knitting style of each individual.
The following method allows to give a rough estimation of the amount of yarn needed for each size, length and flare, but is not to be taken as a precise answer.
I recommend knitting at a loose gauge to get a nicer drape.
I do not recommend using a yarn heavier than worsted as the skirt will get too heavy and won’t drape properly.

The two charts available in the pattern pictures on the left indicate meters / yards needed for a typical DK weight stitch gauge (21 sts for 10 cm / 4’‘). It is based on the gauge and not the actual yarn weight. This means that if you hit a DK gauge using a sport weight yarn, use the value for DK. Note that there is no Ankle length available for the Large flare.

If your gauge is different than DK, find the value for your waist size/length/degree of flare in the chart and multiply the result with the following number to adapt the amount:

  • Lace gauge (28+ sts per 10 cm / 4’‘) : 1.6
  • Fingering (25 - 27 sts) : 1.4
  • Sport (23 - 24 sts) : 1.2
  • DK (21 - 22 sts) : 1
  • Worsted (16 - 20 sts) : 0.9 For example, if you knit a Fingering weight, 80 cm / 32’‘ waist, Below knee (60 cm / 24’‘), Large flare, the chart gives you 1800 m / 1970 yards. Multiply that value by 1.4 and you will find your meterage / yardage: 1800 * 1.4 = 2520 meters / 1970 * 1.4 = 2758 yards

Use your best judgment to fudge with the numbers, for example if your gauge is between 27 and 28 sts, mutliply with ~1.5 and not with 1.4 or 1.6.

NEEDLES
Larger needles (stockinette): use a needle size that gives you an open and drapey fabric without being see-through. If you’re not sure, start swatching with the biggest size needle recommended for your yarn.

Smaller needles (waistband): use a needle 2-3 sizes smaller than the Larger needle, or the size that will give you a sturdy and dense fabric.
