Skep Hat II
Skep Hats share a top-down construction, and focus on easy textured stitches and small details. So far, they’ve used short row shaping as well, and use both flat and circular knitting techniques. (You can knit this with just one circular needle, but it’s a strain for the first rounds; you may opt to use DPNs there.)
Samples are shown for sizes small and large.
Skep Hat II is a garter-stitch textured cap knit in heavier yarn than Skep Cap I.
You’ll need a circular needle to knit the main gauge and a smaller needle or DPNs for finishing. (Knitting samples, I found it easier to slip all sts to a smaller circular needle, rather than DPNs.)
Materials:
-80-200 yards of worsted-weight yarn; samples are size small and size large, shown in Malabrigo Yarn Rios in Frank Ochre
-1 16” flexible circular needle in US7/4.5mm, or size needed for gauge.
-1 16” circular needle OR 2 DPNs in US5/3.75mm, or two sizes down from the size needed for gauge
-4 removable stitch markers.
-Tapestry needle.
-Waste yarn for provisional cast-on
-Crochet hook, size F-G/3.75-4.0mm or to suit yarn
Gauge:
Gauge is 9 sts and 18 rows measured over 2”/5cm, in blocked garter stitch. Gauge is given over 2”/5cm to make checking easier; you can use the garter tab. Please be sure to check your gauge.
The .PDF includes a quick overview for garter stitch weaving, but Interweave also has a nice tutorial viewable at this link.
