Updated January 2021. Please use the most recent Version 2.

Please note that there is an error in the original version of this pattern:

  • On page 4, the last line in Step 1 of the short row shaping for the cuff should read: DS, K3 to EOR, do NOT turn. 19 stitches on N1 and 15 stitches on N2.

These mittens were inspired by Lana Holden’s Skew socks. The construction allows you to work the thumb as you knit the mitt, avoiding the need to pick up and knit the thumb separately. A three needle bind off gives you a decorative chain that runs along the length of the thumb.

I’ve included a tutorial for German short rows, which are simple to create, and simple to work back into your knitting.

This pattern is written for Magic Loop on a long circular needle, and assumes that you can perform a variety of increases and decreases. As this is a free pattern, I have not gone into much detail in explaining techniques, nor has it been extensively test knitted.

Thank you to Fran for your suggestions and test knitting.
Thank you to Tim for planting the idea of “Timmitts” in my brain in the first place. :)
