Gauge not crucial. Any similar size needle and hook may be used, according to the yarn chosen. Likewise, any Heavy Worsted to Aran weight yarn can be used.

Change the style by using a more luxurious, drapey, solid color or even a hand-painted yarn.

A tighter gauge will yield a firm fabric, whereas a looser gauge (i.e. fingering weight yarn with a #10 needle) will yield a more open fabric, and the stitch pattern and texture will be less noticeable.

Keep in mind that a tighter gauge will be likely to curl and need vigorous blocking.
