What do you do if you get lost in an Icelandic forest? Stand up.

I was introduced to this old Icelandic joke by a tour guide in the country (we were on our way out of the capital to try and catch sight of the Northern Lights). Apparently, it was a traditionally lighthearted way of poking fun at the country’s complete lack of forest and wooded areas. Nowadays, however, the joke is not nearly as relevant, with beautiful spruce and pine forests to be found across the country and the Skogur (forest) socks are exactly what I dream of wearing to explore them.

The socks are worked from the toe up, using magic loop on a long circular needle. The pattern includes full detailed instructions on how to work a German short row heel but this can be substituted for any alternative heel of your choice. The colourwork is simple and intuitive, with just a four-stitch pattern repeat so there are no long floats to contend with.

The colourwork only requires a small amount of the two contrast colours so now is the time to go and dive head first into your stash and see what precious scraps you have waiting!
