Skraeling Cowl
Skræling is the name the Norse settlers to Greenland used for the peoples they encountered already living there. In surviving sources, it is first applied to the Thule people, the proto-Inuit group with whom the Norse coexisted in Greenland after about the 13th century. In the sagas, it is also used for the peoples of the region known as Vinland whom the Norse encountered during their expeditions there in the early 11th century.
The Skraeling cowl is shaped after the fashion of traditional Inuit parka hoods, which are deep and generous and form a luxurious cowl about the shoulders when worn down. Shaped through short rows so that the back of the cowl is taller than the front, the ribs, or welts, of stocking stitch and reverse stocking stitch are reminiscent of the ribs of whale bones that the Thule people used to reinforce the walls and roof of their dugout dwellings.
