Skærsommernat Shawl
Skærsommernat means Midsummer night. It is a shawl designed for those very special, single skeins of amazingly beautiful yarn – the ones you couldn’t not buy, even if you didn’t have a plan for them. Add some silk-mohair and get a large asymmetrical triangular shawl! The shawl is large enough to snuggle up in, but still light enough to use as a scarf.
It is knit in stripes of merino and silk-mohair, with lace sections in merino. It features two different lace patterns, and you can easily substitute one for the other if you like to.
The Skærsommernat Shawl belongs to the midsummer nights; the long, bright and beautiful nights of summer which are too warm for a sweater, but perfect for a shawl.
Measurements:
Approximately 225 x 80 cm / 88.5 x 31.5 inches after blocking
Yardage:
Yarn A: 100 gr fingering weight merino (400 meters)
Yarn B: 50 gr silk/mohair (420 meters)
The sample is knit in 100 gr Jilly, in the colorway Billowy, from Dream in Color Yarn (https://www.dreamincoloryarn.com/yarn/jilly/) and 2 balls of white Drops Kid Silk.
Needles:
4 mm (US6), preferably circular needles, as you will end up with a lot of stitches. See also “Gauge”.
Gauge:
18 sts x 24 rows in garter stitch (after blocking) = 10 x 10 cm. Gauge is not terribly important in a shawl, but of course your finished shawl will be either larger or smaller than expected, if the gauge is different from that in the pattern. I recommend you find the gauge that produces a fabric you love, and work with that!
