The textures of this design were inspired by the lines intersecting in the sky. Knit in fingering weight wool, the wrap is easy to style and to wear: it can be worn as a long lightweight scarf to provide comfort during the first chilly autumn nights, and as a cozy wrap or cowl once the fall weather comes into its own. Contrasting darker lines accentuate the change between the stitch patterns. The pattern can end whenever all of the yarn in a skein is used up, which makes the knit very flexible in terms of yardage and gauge.

The scarf is knit from the central set-up square outwards. Two identical sides can be worked one by one or from two different balls of yarn at the same time. Sections of dropped stitches, simple lace, stockinette, and small slipped stitch cables arranged in a chevron pattern are separated and highlighted by the lines of wraps in contrasting color. The wraps can also be worked in an array of colors to use up scrap yarns.

• Fingering weight yarn, MC: 810 metres / 890 yards, CC: 75 metres / 80 yards
• Sample scarf yarn: Uist Wool Astair (Cheviot and alpaca; 165 metres / 180 yards per 50 g) in colorways Poll (MC) and Abhainn (CC).

Needles

• 4 mm / US 6 circular needles (or needle size to obtain gauge)
• 4 mm / US 6 double-pointed needles (or needle size to obtain gauge)

To work this pattern using the magic loop technique, use a circular needle with a cable length of at least at least 80 cm / 32” instead of double-pointed needles.

Gauge

22 sts x 32 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” (worked flat, in stockinette stitch, after blocking)
