What is a knitter to do with all those beautiful little bits of leftover yarn? Show them off, of course!

Skyfire is a triangular brioche shawl which uses fingering and lace weight yarns in the same colourway as the body of the fabric, with colourful accents provided by short lengths of precious leftovers.

The bursts of colour against the dark blue used in my shawl reminded me of fireworks, therefore I decided on the name Skyfire.

Although the sample shawl uses both fingering and lace weight yarns, the shawl could be worked in fingering weight only, or lace weight only. Other weights may also be substituted, just adjust the number of repeats to reach the desired size.

While the sample uses the same colour but different weights for the main and contrast colours, it could also be worked with different colours. It could also be worked with a single accent colour rather than changing colour after every section, as in the sample.

Materials:
• Co-ordinating colours of fingering weight and lace weight yarn, approximately 450m (492yds) of each for the main and contrast colours (MC and CC).
• Fingering weight yarn for the accent colours (AC), approximately 60m/66yds in total.
• 4mm/US 6 circular needle with an 80cm/32” or longer cable.
• Cable needle or locking stitch marker.
• Tapestry needle to weave in ends.

Size of finished shawl:
Wingspan 180cm/72”, depth 90cm/36”, relaxed after blocking.

Gauge:
Obtaining gauge is not essential, as long as you are happy with the fabric you are getting. Different gauge will affect the size of the finished object and the amount of yarn used.

The sample shawl had a gauge of 12 stitches and 13 rows in a 10cm x 10cm (4” x 4”) square, after blocking.
