My sun pillow is one large 3D granny square of a sun. I had planned to add a face to the sun, and when I did, my family decided that it looks like she is sleeping! Therefore, I decided to name this pillow, the Sleeping Sun Pillow.
Surface crochet is utilized to create the sun’s face. If you are new to this technique, there is a photo tutorial and explanation included in the pattern. The back of the pillow is simply a dark pink traditional granny square. The pillow is joined along three sides and the bottom is held together by five buttons, so the pillowcase can be taken on and off of the insert.
The written pattern includes some pictures to explain some of the steps. I write my patterns in U.S. terms, but the beginning of the pattern explains how to translate it to UK terms if you prefer them!
Any DK weight yarn will work for this pattern. I used Patons Grace and Rowan Summerlite DK yarn. You will need one light yellow, one mustard yellow, two cream, one black, three hot pink, and one light pink, but feel free to try out different color combinations! Additionally, you will need a 3.5 mm crochet hook, 5 buttons (1.5 cm in diameter), and an 18 by 18 in (46 cm) square pillow.
