The Sleeping Sun Sweater is a loose fitting seamless sweater with stranded colorwork on the yoke and sleeves, knit in fingering weight yarn. For both body as sleeves you can opt for one of two styles: for the body you can choose between a slightly cropped fit or a dropped hem; for the sleeves you can choose between a loose cuff or a form fitting sleeve.

The colorwork is excellent to play with gradient and fade sets. Five contrast colors are used in the original, but feel free to experiment with more or less colors. The original contrast colors were ordered with the lightest color as CC5, so as to fade into the MC.

Skills required
Basic knitting skills, working in the round, colorwork.

Gauge
10x10cms/4x4” = 22sts x 30 rows on 3.5mm needles in stockinette stitch in the round.

Size and finished measurements
Size: 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
Finished circumference at bust: 89 (98, 109, 118, 127, 137, 146) cms/35 (38.5, 43, 46.5, 50, 54, 57.5)”
Fit: 5-15cms/2-6” of positive ease around the bust. The neck is quite wide on smaller sizes and the sleeves are form fitting at the top.

Materials
Needles and notions
3.5mm and 3.00mm needles, or necessary to obtain gauge. I use only one cable length, 93cm/37”, both for working in the round and for the magic loop method (with 13cm/5” needle tips). You can opt for shorter cable lengths for the yoke and/or a different method for working in the round, knitters preference.
Two stitch markers
Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.

Yarn
The samples use The Fox and the Knight Fluffy Fox singles in the following colors:

  • Original kit: Captain Holt (MC), Mary Shelley (CC1), Jasnah (CC2), There’s Coffee in that Nebula (CC3), So Say We All (CC4), We are Borg (CC5).
  • Red kit: Willow (MC), Valkyrie (CC1), Mantis (CC2), Nakia (CC3), Ultimate Detective/Genius (CC4), Okoye (CC5).

Approximately 850 (900, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1650, 1800) meters or 3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5) skeins of the main color. For the contrast colors, approximately 20 grams or 70 meters per color for sizes 1-4, and 30-40 grams or 140 meters for sizes 5-8. This loosely this translates to 1 (1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2) mini skein sets, without swatching! These estimates are based on a minimum of 5 colors used, if you have less contrast colors you will need more of each. Also note for sizes 5 and up, CC1 and CC2 are used the most, so make sure you have enough of those.
These estimates work for both styles, you will need a bit less of the MC for the original fit but a bit more of the contrast colors. Vice versa, for the dropped hem you need the max amount of MC but a bit less of the contrast colors.

See the project pages of the test knitters for suggestions of which other yarns you can use!
