About this design
This gorgeous unisex textured scarf is the partner for my Sleepy Wombat Socks. I developed the stitch pattern one evening while twiddling around on my needles experimenting with slipped stitches and lifted loops. I loved the result I got for the Sleepy Wombat Socks and got an extra dollop of delight when I realised that the reverse side of the stitch pattern was equally pleasing. Sadly, this side is not visible in the socks, so of course I had to translate the stitch pattern so that it would work knitting flat and the Sleepy Wombat Scarf was the result.
The stitch pattern is only six stitches wide and has an eight row repeat so it is easy to memorise. Only two of the rows involve a little extra twiddle, which is when you pick up the loop of yarn carried in front of some slipped stitches in an earlier row and knit it together through the back loop with a stitch already on the needle—easy peasy . The edges of the scarf are finished with a tiny slipped stitch rolled edge, which provides a nice smooth contrast to the nubby texture of the stitch pattern.
I hope you love the two-sided texture as much as I do and spend some time whipping a scarf for yourself and for a special “other” in your life.
Tension
24 stitches x 44 rows over 10 centimetres (4 inches) in Sleepy Wombat stitch, knitted flat using 3.75 mm (US size 5, UK size 9) needles. A close match for tension is important for this pattern to ensure the correct finished dimensions. Please move up or down a needle size and swatch one more time if your gauge does not match.
Yarn
548 meters/599 yards of 5 ply/sport weight yarn (approximately 200g).
The stitch pattern in this scarf will be beautifully showcased if you select a solid or semi-solid yarn. A multi-dyed yarn or a complex speckled yarn may be too busy to allow the stitch pattern to shine through.
The sample scarves were knitted with Patons Bluebell Merino 5 ply in colour 4404 (Dark Teal) and Shepherd Juliette Fine Crepe 4 ply in colour 795 (Sunset Blue). The latter yarn is a heritage yarn that I inherited from my Great Aunty Peg and was actually closer to 5 ply/sport weight yarn when knitted up. More about my Great Aunty Peg here.
Needles
A pair of 3.75 mm (US size 5, UK size 9) needles.
Notions
Tapestry needle.
Blocking materials.
