Sleepy Wombat Socks
About this Design
These gorgeous unisex textured socks are the partner for my Sleepy Wombat Scarf. I developed the stitch pattern one evening while twiddling around on my needles experimenting with slipped stitches and lifted loops.
The stitch pattern is only six stitches wide and has an eight row repeat so it is easy to memorise. Only two of the rows involve a little extra twiddle, which is when you pick up the loop of yarn carried in front of some slipped stitches in an earlier row and knit it together through the back loop with a stitch already on the needle—easy peasy .
Like all my other sock patterns, this one is toe-up with a German short-row heel and a nice deep gusset and heel flap.
Oh, and say hi to Wompy the Wombat – a much loved toy in our household, and a very patient model.
Tension
32 stitches x 48 rows over 10 centimetres (4 inches) in stocking (stockinette) stitch, knitted in the round using 2.25 mm (US size 1, UK size 13) needles. A close match for tension is important for this pattern in order to ensure a good fit. Please move up or down a needle size and swatch one more time if your gauge does not match.
Yarn
305 metres/334 yards of 4-ply/fingering weight sock yarn (approx. 100g).
The stitch pattern in these socks will be beautifully showcased if you select a solid, semi-solid or tonal semi-solid yarn. A multi-dyed yarn or a complex speckled yarn may be too busy to allow the stitch pattern to shine through.
The beige and brown sample socks were knitted using heritage sock yarn from the stash of my beloved Great Aunty Peg (read more about my Great Aunty Peg here). The beautiful red multi-dye socks are made with Waratah Fibres silk merino blend sock yarn. No given shade on the label.
The Pattern
This pattern includes written and charted instructions as well as links to video tutorials (produced by other people) for most of the techniques used in the design.
