Last year while taking a class with my dear friend, I fell in love with fiber spinning. Knowing that I couldn’t afford a spinning wheel of my own, she rented a wheel for me from our LYS. I soon had enough handspun yarn that I wanted to design a pattern that would feature it. Although the final version of this design uses a commercially available yarn, the first iteration was knitted with those small bits of handspun. My friend’s act of kindness kindled what I expect will be a lifelong love for spinning, and so this pattern is a reminder of how small acts (and small stitches) can create something beautiful and magical.

Beginning with a provisional cast on, this piece is knitted flat, and then the two ends are grafted using the Kitchener stitch. Each row begins and ends with a seed stitch border that is knitted in the main color, and each of the six sections includes several different textural patterns–some of which are worked in a single color and others which are worked in two colors simultaneously.

Although the pattern calls for three skeins of Expression Fiber Arts Pearlescent Worsted yarn, other worsted weight yarn in colors of your choice can be used and are appropriate for this project. I used nearly the entire skein of MC yarn, so if your gauge is looser than mine, I suggest making sure that you have more than 220 yards of your MC yarn.
