A baby blanket with a checkerboard pattern, making a mild optical illusion of a bulge on the flat blanket.

This pattern is intended to be worked in Tunisian crochet using intarsia. But, since there’s a chart, you can adapt it to your style of choice.

It is worked in one piece, without seaming. The border is also worked while the piece is being made. The back is not as nice as the front.

Gauge is not particularly crucial. Using your gauge on a swatch, you can predict the size of your finished project by using these measurements: including a 2-stitch border, the first variation is 109 stitches wide and 152 rows high; including the 2-stitch border, the second variation is 113 stitches wide and 156 rows high.

The only special technique used is intarsia, but there are a lot of colours to manage, so I would rate this pattern as advanced-beginner difficulty.
