Crochet PATTERN (written in ENGLISH, US terminology, 1 PDF file) for Male and Female cat, puppy, small dog Basic Sweater!
Designed for:
- furry friends with the CHEST circumference (around the widest part behind the front legs) up to 18.5 inches (47 cm), weighing no more than 18.8 lb (8.5 kg);
- about 219 yds (200 m) of LIGHT or MEDIUM WORSTED yarn (US weight category 3 or 4);
- crochet density (GAUGE) from 14 to 21 sc BLO stitches per 4 inches (10 cm), depending on the size.
NOTE: Pattern contains a chart with the suggested GAUGE for average sizes of the following dog breeds:
- Chihuahua, Toy Terrier (XXS);
- Yorkie, Maltese (XS);
- Bichon, Shih Tzu, Chinese Crested, Mini Pinscher, Toy Poodle, Mini Dachshund (S);
- Mini Poodle, Dachshund, Pug, Jack Russell, Scottish Terrier, Mini Schnauzer (M).
The pattern can be applied to adult cats of most breeds.
Crochet skill level required:
‘INTERMEDIATE’ (EASY for those who are focused enough to count stitches carefully).
You should know how to read abbreviated crochet patterns and how to crochet:
- chain stitch (ch);
- single crochet (sc);
- half double crochet (hdc);
- double crochet (dc);
- increase (2 dc in 1 st);
- decrease (dc2tog);
- BLO stitches (made in Back Loop Only).

Crochet hook H (5.0 mm) and a skein of Alize WOOLTIME yarn used to crochet the YORKIE / MALTESE size (XS) pictured:
1 skein = 219 yds / 3.53 oz (200 m / 100 g),
75% Superwash Wool, 25% Polyamide.
In the item shown, the density of crochet is 18 stitches / 22 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in sc BLO (unstretched).
- For smaller pets, suggested: 1 skein of Bernat WOOL-UP Worsted yarn and a hook US 7 (4.5 mm).
- For larger pets, suggested: 2 skeins of Red Heart CHIC SHEEP yarn and a hook US I (5.5 mm) or bigger.
Scissors and a large eye needle needed to complete the project.
NOTE: You can complete the look with a hooded snood that will keep your pet ears and neck warm and protected from wind and cold (as shown in the last picture):
