Detailed instructions with photos, for fun to make, small, colorful mat/coaster/mug rug/trivet, using the tapestry method of crochet, sometimes called intarsia. Endless color fun! 33 page pdf.

This petite 5.5” diameter mat has many uses. Crochet a set of 4 or more for use as coasters, or make just one alone as a nice mug rug or trivet. It’s versatile for your home décor, or to make and give as gifts for Christmas, Hanukah, Birthdays, Mothers’ Day, Showers, and so many other occasions.

There are two basic designs – a three color and a six color mat. I’ve provided the basic format for both the three and six color design, along with a list of the various color schemes I used for the mats pictured. Of course, you don’t have to follow the color schemes shown. Have fun and create your own color palette for any occasion, holiday, décor, or season.

I used and recommend inexpensive worsted weight acrylic craft yarn - Red Heart Super Saver - so that the mat will have body and durability. You can use any other worsted weight yarn, including cotton, but I would probably avoid very soft yarns.

You’ll need only small amounts of each color - between 2 and 12 yards. Whether you do the three color or the six color, 3 or 6 skeins of Red Heart Super Saver are enough to make many mats.

The finished size is about 5.5” diameter but may vary a little based on the yarn, and even the colors that you use as yarn weight can vary slightly among colors even within the same brand.
