Garter stitch is a stable non-curling stitch that makes a thick, cushiony fabric. It does so because the  rows of stitches are formed in  alternating directions. A single knit  stitch is un-balanced, causing the yarn  to pull in one direction, thus the fabric rolls. Ribbing doesn’t do this because  alternate stitches are formed in  alternating directions. Garter stitch  alternates rows instead of stitches with  the same effect but a different look.  Ribbing contracts (pulls in). Garter  stitch does not.

If other methods of making garter stitch confuse and annoy you, try this. It  may not be truly “smarter” but it is an alternative that works well. Knit with  2 strands cotton worsted weight yarn such as Peaches & Cream or Lion  Cotton. Use the purple Knifty Knitter or similar loom. 1 skein re-wound into 2  balls is ample. By the time the dishcloth is completed, you’ll be an expert.  Several other garter stitch projects are also described.
