Smocking is traditionally an embroidery technique done on light weight fabrics such as silk and cotton. It developed in England for the practicality purposes of allowing a garment to be form fitting and flexible in areas such as necklines, wrist cuffs, and bodices/waists.

For this example, we will be creating a large 12 x 12 block that can be used as a dishcloth, blanket square, or as a simple stitch sample. The sample knit here is the first in a set of blocks to be released and is intended as part of a quilt sampler.
