Smocky Placemats
These placemats take advantage of the unique look and texture of Tunisian smock stitch, worked in the round (double-ended Tunisian hook required!). They lie perfectly flat after blocking and are a fun way to use lighter weight cotton yarns (heavy fingering weight, which I have trouble finding a suitable use for), but any worsted craft cotton can also be used. Gauge is not given because the pattern is written to be flexible for any yarn weight and any finished size. Tunisian crochet in the round is easy and provides an opportunity for a textured look with 2 lightly contrasting colours for the forward and return passes. If you are not familiar with this technique or smock stitch itself, the pattern contains instructions and links to videos which should help. This pattern is included in my eBook Tunisian Rounds and Ovals, which also includes patterns for 2 other ovals and 2 circles.
