Smooth Blue Beardtongue (Penstemon Nitidus) is a purple-blue flower found here in the prairie grasslands of Southern Alberta. The flowers are clustered around the stem and are tube-shaped. They are popular with butterflies and hummingbirds. The root of this plant was used by First Nations people to treat snake bite - there are rattle snakes in the prairies and badlands of Alberta.

The purple-blue colour and the pattern of flowers led to the creation of this cozy cowl. The lace repeat creates a texture that is reminiscent of the flower clusters, and the yarn I used matches the colour of the flowers almost exactly.
