THE SNOW GODDESS
Snædís is a shawl that is knit sideways from end to end. It starts with a cable border that grows wider until it is three cables wide. When the cables are at their full width, a garter stitch field is introduced that gets bigger and bigger until the shawl reaches your desired depth. The increases are made between the garter stitches and the cable border, and when the shawl is getting smaller again, the decreases are done in the same place. This makes the garter stitches create vertical lines in the ­upper part, while short-rows give the border extra rounds every now and then so that it curves around the edge as the shawl grows.

The shawl is knit in a fluffy, soft yarn with big needles. This creates an airy and light fabric that will keep you warm in the winter cold. Use needles a couple of ­sizes larger than recommended for the yarn. For a larger or smaller shawl, increase or decrease the number of ­repeats of the charts to your preference.

Snædís is an Icelandic name that means snow goddess. The pattern is written for Solkustens Spinnverkstad’s 2-­ply Jämtland, a locally produced fluffy and soft yarn spun at a mini-mill in Roslagen with wool from ­Swedish sheep. The Jämtland sheep is a mix between merino sheep with its soft wool, and Swedish svea sheep whose wool is more bouncy and fluffy. The combination gives a next-to-skin yarn and is available in both white and grey at ­­
