Snake Coil Cowl
The Snake Coil Cowl is temporarily available as a FREE download! Happy Holidays! I’ve made a lot more snakes since my first draft of the pattern, and have gotten lots of notes from all of you on how to make the instructions clearer. When I have a comprehensive update (with several snake head patterns) I’ll change it to a paid pattern
Slithery, sweet, and extremely snuggly for a member of the reptile family, the Snake Coil Cowl is a delightful accessory. Wear it as a cosy cowl around the neck or pull it up around your ears. However you wear it, the Snake Coil Cowl is a warm and wonderful solution for cold-blooded winter days.
Because this design was originally knit as a scrap project, gauge and yarn yardage/amounts are not exact, and don’t need to be.
The approximate amounts of yarn I used for the sample as shown:
Main Colour: 25 grams worsted-weight yarn
Contrast Colour: 15 grams worsted-weight yarn
As more people make the pattern, I’ll be able to add in more specific information. But go ahead and knit it in solids, stripes, or your wildest variegated scraps: the Snake Coil Cowl is a brilliant stashbuster, and it is easily customizable to fit a large range of sizes. (Just cast on more or less stitches to start!)
This unforgettable cowl also knits up lightening-quick in worsted-weight yarn, which means it is the perfect last-minute gift for anyone who appreciates the beauty of our scaly serpent friends. There are a few short rows to shape the head, but otherwise it’s just knitting and purling, seamlessly in the round. (Slytherins will be especially grateful!)
Head description: You can make this head section as thick as you desire. I think the pattern is unclear, and I still haven’t had time to edit it properly. This is the way I’ve been making them:
So: for the snake head,
knit in stockinette for 3 rows ending on a purl side
knit 5, wrap and turn
purl 5
knit to end
purl to end
knit 5, wrap and turn
purl 5
knit to end
purl to end
cast off in knit
