Snake Eggs
Snake Eggs is a colorful cowl using stacked stitches and bobbles inspired by Xandy Peters and their Ribbon Candy Scarf.
I finally got around to playing with stacked stitches and wanted to put my own spin on it. I was living in North Dakota at the time and wanted something fun to keep my face warm. This cowl uses stacked stitches (easier than they seem) + colorful little bobbles for a super fun one of a kind cowl. The wavy lines look like sunny hills or funky little snakes. Mix up your color palette to suit your mood!
You will need:
Approx 100-150 yards of 3 colors in worsted/aran weight yarn
5.5mm circular knitting needles
Tapestry needle/scissors
Gauge in pattern as written:
17 stitches and 16 rows = approx. 4.5 inches wide by 3.25 inches tall
OTHER NOTES
This scarf is worked flat, then joined to the first row in the last row. Afterwards, stitches are picked up and knit off of each edge to create clean borders.
Stacked stitches were new to me a few months ago but after some practice, I found out they were a lot of fun! Don’t let them intimidate you - instructions are provided for all of the stacked increases and decreases (which only happen 4 rows out of the repeat. This pattern is largely garter stitch with a little bit of shaping!)
This pattern involves a lot of color changing, but provides optional instructions on how to weave ends in as you work so you don’t have to do it at the end.
You can adjust the size by CO in multiples of 8+1 and working them for as many repeats as you like.
Want a simplified version?
As written, the waves mirror each other in each repeat. The mirroring has a bit of a tricky start and end to the second wave set, to simplify, you can knit rows 1-16 and ignore the following rows - repeat 8 times instead of 4.
