In 2020, I designed a colorwork cowl called Winter’s Night Cowl. In 2021, I joined a knitting group who saw the cowl pattern and remarked that I should do a cardigan with the same colorwork design. I thought it sounded rather ambitious, but it got into my brain and I couldn’t quite get it out. Now, in 2024, it’s finally out of my brain and onto the needles. It is based on many Scandinavian-style cardigans with steeked openings on the front and armholes. It is knit from the bottom up in the round, with a Latvian braid after the ribbing. The armholes are steeked, and the sleeves are sewn in. The armholes also have a sewn-down facing to cover the seams. The button bands and neck ribbing are added last. One difference between this pattern and traditional Scandinavian patterns is that the sleeve for each size has its own chart. The center 32 stitches of the sleeve chart use the Main Repeat section of the Body chart. Ribbon can be added to the inside of the button bands to add a traditional (and fun) touch. The name, Snoflinga, is Swedish for snowflake, a nod to my maternal grandmother’s heritage.
