Snow Can Wait

“Snow can wait” is the first line of Tori Amos’s song Winter. Although Tori sings about mittens, I indulge myself in thinking she could appreciate this delicate shawl.
The very first name for this shawl was “The Little Green Thing”. And it is exactly this: a little green thing to wear when in need of warm and confort.
And a little green thing to knit when in need of a mindless and comforting project on your needle.
The marriage between a fingering yarn and a fluffy silk mohair lace yarn makes it soft, quick to work, and intrinsically elegant.
Yarn
Approx 100 g, 400 m / 437 yds of any fingering-weight yarn
AND
Approx 50 g, 420 m / 459 yds of any mohair lace-weight yarn
The two yarn are held together for most of the shawl
Sample is knit with:
Fingering: 100 g, 400 m / 437 yds of Penny Lane Yarns Fingering Lane, 100% superwash Merino, colour Sage
Mohair: 50 g, 420 m /459 yds of Penny Lane Yarns Kidsilk Lane, 72% mohair, 28% silk, colour Sage
Needles
150 cm / 59” circular needles to obtain the correct gauge
Sample used 4mm/US6
You will also need a bigger needle to bind off. For the sample I used 5mm/US8
Other
Tapestry needle to weave in ends
Blocking wires and pins
Gauge
19 sts and 28 rows over 10cm / 4” in garter stitch, severely wet-blocked.
Gauge is crucial for this project, as it will determine yarn usage and final measurements
Skill Needed
Casting on, knitting, purling, basic increases and decreases, German short rows (see above), binding off
Final measurements
Wingspan, 124,5 cm / 49”, width 37 cm / 14.5”
