The band is worked flat and then seamed. And, then the body of the hat is worked in spirals around. It is easy to lose track of the start of the round with spirals, so I would use a stitch marker or a scrap piece of yarn to mark the first stitch of the round. This hat uses a super bulky weight yarn, and works up quickly.
