Snow Globe Mitts
This pattern has been updated:
Unlike the previous version of this pattern where the front and palm of the mitten both have the snow globe image and can be worn interchangeably, the 2022 version has designated left and right mitten, and the patterning on the palm is different from the front. A few slight changes have been made to the patterning on the cuff and snow globes. Previous version is also still available.
Snow Globes – happy and peaceful magical worlds tucked away in their perfect little universe. It is so much fun to hold a snow globe in your hands and watch the snow fall. Well, these snow globes you can tuck away in your pockets and take them with you anywhere you go; they’ll never break and they’ll keep your hands warm too. A fingerless version of my Mitten Wonderland pattern Snow Globe Mitts feature 2 sets of scenes, 2 color options, and more. Have fun making them and enjoy wearing them!
Materials
• US Size 0 (2mm) set of dpns or circular needles (for Magic Loop method)
US size 00 (1.75mm) for ribbing (optional)
• Fingering weight yarn (I used Knit Picks Stroll Solids, Glimmer, and Tonal) – 231y/50 g (211m/50g). 2-color version: Background Color (BC) – 131 y (120 m), Contrast Color 1 (CC) – 131 y (120 m). 3-color version: Background Color (BC) – 120 y (110 m), Contrast Color 1 (CC) – 120 y (110 m), Contrast Color 2 (CC2) – 27 y ( 25 m), small scraps of yellow for windows and the moon (optional)
• Tapestry needle for adding details in duplicate stitch (optional)
Notes
- Size: The mitts start with 64 stitches, then the number of stitches is increased to 82 to accommodate the thumb, after which it reduces back to 64 stitches. With recommended yarn, needles, and gauge they’ll fit an 8-9” circumference hand. To make larger size mitts use larger needles. Also, please, be aware that the cuffs on these run long (the increases for the thumb start at the wrist area, but the thumb itself is not set until round 61), so you may want to only make your bottom ribbing about an inch or less.
- Colors: There is a 2-color and a 3-color version. The 2-color version has 2 options: option 1 has the same (mirror) image on the back and the front of the mitten; option 2 has different images on the front and back. If you prefer your snow globe to look more like the actual snow globe, there are options showing the globe with the base and either words “Joy”, or the year “2022” added in duplicate stitch.
- Stranded colorwork: Follow the charts from right to left. Some sections of the design require you to carry yarn over longer stretches of one color. Make sure to catch longer floats using preferred method.
- The notion of right and left mitten is only used for convenience, the mittens are interchangeable and can be worn on either hand.
Finally, Thank You so much bgow, Mitt, and kolorplay for all your help! I really appreciate it!
