Snow on Snow Cowl and Mitts
In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan;
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter
Long ago…

Snow falling, layer upon layer, dusting trees and landscape. A pretty cowl with matching fingerless mitts featuring a lace detail to celebrate the season of winter. Inspired by lines from the classic winter poem by British poet Christina Rossetti. Using two lovely yarns held together for scrumptious softness--light, but warming. Yarns held double to equal a sport or DK weight is ideal for this project. The cowl is knit flat in the Snow Lace motif, then seamed. (Cowl can also be knit in the round, if preferred.) The fingerless mitts are begun with the Snow Lace motif worked flat, then joined for knitting in the round (instructions given for Magic Loop, but easily adaptable for DPNS.) to create a split cuff. Tips are given for size adjustment. Two skeins of each quality of yarn for size Small, and three skeins of each quality yarn for the Medium/Large size when making the cowl and mitts as a set. Some proficiency with basic crochet is helpful (especially for the fingerless mitts) but not required, regular knitting techniques can be applied. Skill level for this set would be enjoyable for courageous beginners and experienced knitters. Make this as a gift--for someone you care for, or even yourself. The set makes a final touch for a special occasion outfit or beautiful coat.
