Snow Queen in Spring
This elegant top is inspired by Queen Elsa’s summery new take on her ice dress in the Disney short Frozen Fever, and similarly incorporates both winter and summer elements to create a classic yet original look. Every knitter is familiar with the Nordic colorwork motif of a snowflake: the eight-petalled geometrical shape that has adorned traditional sweaters, mittens, and hats for generations. I have translated that traditional snowflake from cozy colorwork into lovely lace motifs that encircle the yoke in this not-quite-off-the-shoulder design, hinting at both the decorative flowers Elsa scatters on her dress and the sheer icy mesh that underlies them. After knitting the lace yoke, stitches are put on hold for the arm holes, and the body is knit in plain stockinette to the hem, gradually increasing to allow a snugger fit at the top yet still have the swishiness and drape in the skirt that is all the fun of an elegant dress. Finally, the fold-over hem gives a clean, professional finish.
